How our clothes are made

From little seed to little clothes: The journey of our organic cotton

1. planting

Our certified organic cotton is grown by independent small farmers and collectives in India. Farmers sow natural cotton seeds saved from previous seasons or obtained from community seed banks.

2. Growing

Farmers rely on natural methods to control pests and encourage growth. Organic farming maintains local biodiversity and fosters cleaner air, water and soil which improves the health of farmers and their communities.

3. Harvesting

The cotton is picked by hand and sent to the processing mill. It takes 5-6 months for cotton to go from seed to fluffy flowers (called cotton bolls).

4. Ginning

The cotton fibre is mechanically separated from the stems, leaves and seeds.

5. Combing

The cleaned cotton is brushed to remove the short fibers leaving only the long, silky fibers.

6. Spinning

The combed cotton is spun into yarn using an automatic spinning machine.

7. Knitting

The yarn is knitted into knit fabrics such as jersey, rib and interlock using an automatic knitting machine.

8. Dyeing or printing

The fabric is dyed or printed using only GOTS-approved dyes which are safe for sensitive baby skin, free of any harmful chemicals and low-impact on the environment. 

✘ No toxic dyes or chemicals such as chlorine bleach, optical brighteners, AZO dyes, plastisol inks, formaldehyde, flame retardants and heavy metals.

9. Cutting

The finished fabric is cut into different shapes (sewing patterns).

10. Sewing

Garments are sewn by staff who work in a fair, safe and respectful environment.

11. Packaging

Swing tags are attached with cotton yarn and the finished garments are packaged using FSC-certified paper bags to protect them from dust, dirt and moisture.

12. Certification

The entire process is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified from start to finish.
